City of Kandy

Welcome to the sacred city of Kandy, where history and spirituality converge in a tapestry of ancient traditions and timeless wonders. Amidst the bustling streets and vibrant markets of this cultural hub lies the revered Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, a sanctuary of faith and devotion that has stood as a beacon of Buddhist heritage for centuries.

As you step through the ornate gates of the temple complex, you're immediately enveloped in an atmosphere of reverence and tranquility. The air is filled with the sweet scent of incense and the soft murmur of prayers, as pilgrims from far and wide come to pay homage to the sacred relic enshrined within.

The history of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic dates back over 2,500 years, to the time of the Buddha himself. According to legend, after the Buddha's cremation, his left canine tooth was salvaged from the funeral pyre and smuggled into Sri Lanka by Princess Hemamala and her husband, Prince Dantha, disguised as merchants. The tooth relic eventually found its way to Kandy, where it has been enshrined and venerated ever since.

As you explore the temple complex, you'll encounter a treasure trove of architectural wonders and cultural artifacts that bear testament to the rich history and heritage of Sri Lanka. Marvel at the intricately carved woodwork and delicate stonework that adorn the temple's halls and shrines, each telling a story of devotion and craftsmanship passed down through generations.

At the heart of the temple lies the sacred chamber that houses the Tooth Relic itself, a golden casket adorned with precious gems and jewels. Here, pilgrims gather to offer prayers and offerings, seeking blessings for health, prosperity, and spiritual enlightenment.

But the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is not just a place of worship – it's also a living testament to the resilience of Sri Lanka's Buddhist community in the face of adversity. Throughout its long history, the temple has weathered invasions, wars, and natural disasters, yet it has emerged unscathed, a symbol of unwavering faith and devotion.

As you stand before the sacred relic, surrounded by the flickering glow of butter lamps and the soothing strains of chanting monks, you can't help but feel a sense of peace and serenity wash over you. It's a moment of transcendence, where the boundaries between past and present, sacred and secular, seem to dissolve, leaving only the timeless essence of the Buddha's teachings and the enduring power of faith.

If you are lucky and find yourself in Kandy during the month of August, The Kandy Perahera is a vibrant and spectacular cultural event held annually in this city. It is a grand procession that pays homage to the sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha, which is housed in the Temple of the Tooth. During the Perahera, elaborately adorned elephants, traditional dancers, drummers, and fire performers parade through the streets, accompanied by the beating of drums and the chanting of prayers. It is a dazzling display of Sri Lankan culture and Buddhist tradition, drawing visitors from around the world to witness its magnificence and spirituality.
